Everything You Can

In a sermon, St. Augustine said: “Do everything you can for the salvation of your home.”
When we think about the salvation of our families—our spouse, our children—what are we actually willing to do?
Of course, other people make their own decisions. They’re their own people with their own free will. We can’t force anyone into heaven.
But we are in control of our actions. Our prayers. Our example. Our sacrifice.
So what are we willing to do for them? What are we willing to risk?
St. Augustine doesn’t pull any punches. He gives us the answer: everything.
Everything you can.
Not everything that’s convenient. Not everything that fits comfortably into your schedule. Not everything that doesn’t cost you much.
Everything you can.
That might mean praying the Rosary daily for a wayward child. Fasting on Fridays for your spouse. Going to Confession regularly so your life reflects Christ more clearly. Having the hard conversation. Forgiving again. Showing up even when you’re tired.
It might mean being the only family at Mass. Being mocked for your faith. Staying faithful when it would be easier to give up.
The salvation of our homes isn’t guaranteed. But our effort should be total.
Do everything you can.
