āA soul that lowers itself through sin drags down with itself the Church, and in some way, the whole world.ā ā Saint John Paul II
Weāve probably heard the idea that thereās no such thing as a victimless crime. Saint John Paul II says the same thing about sin.
Sin doesnāt just hurt us. It doesnāt just damage our relationship with God. It doesnāt even stop with the people immediately around us. As John Paul II says, in some way it drags down the whole Church and the whole world.
Now, I donāt think he said that to make us feel like trash in our sin. But itās worth recognizing that thereās more at stake than just ourselves.
And honestly, even if we stop right thereāat how sin hurts the people around us, our spouses, our children, our neighbors, our immediate communityāthat itself becomes its own motivation. We donāt have to worry about somebody halfway around the world to feel the weight of this.
But the truth is, sin pulls others down.Even those sins we think are private. Even the ones we tell ourselves are our own business.
Thereās no such thing as a private sin.
And hereās the flip sideāif our sin drags others down, then our holiness lifts them up. Youāre not just trying to be better for yourself. We need you. We need you to be holy. You need me to be holy.
Weāre all in this together. What you do matters. Who youāre becoming matters.
Not just for you. For all of us.
