Second the Motion

“My Lord Jesus, grant that I may feel Your grace and second it in such a way that I empty my heart so that You, my friend, my brother, my king, my God, my love, may fill it.”
One phrase really struck me in this prayer from St. Josemaría Escrivá: second it.
The idea of seconding something might make you think of politics or board meetings—someone makes a motion, someone else seconds it, and the work moves forward.
St. Josemaría puts this into a faith context. And he calls out whose job it is to second things: ours.
The Lord initiates. He moves in our hearts. He calls. He invites. He offers grace.
And we respond. We second the motion.
God doesn’t force His way into our hearts. He knocks. He waits. He moves—and then asks if we’ll move with Him.
Right now, today, He’s putting things into motion. He’s moving things forward, directing them toward Him, toward holiness, toward love.
The question is: how are we going to second it? Will we cooperate with what He’s already begun?
The motion has been made. It’s our turn.
