“It is better for me, Lord, to suffer tribulation as long as You are with me, than to reign without You, rejoice without You, glory in myself without You. What would heaven mean to me without You?” — St. Bernard
Two things come to mind when I sit with those words.
The first: how often do we forget that we are in the presence of God? That the Holy Trinity dwells in our souls — right now, in this moment?
The second: that fact is true whether we’re in good times or bad. To St. Bernard’s point, hard times with Jesus are still a lot better than good times without Him. And of course, we don’t have to choose — we have the opportunity to be with Him in all of it.
We just have to remember.
Let us pray. Lord, help us to remember that You are with us — in the good times and the bad, in the ordinary moments and the hard ones. Never let us forget that You are here. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
